Senior receives IHSA recognition

Marist_David_DanielsMarist High School senior David Daniels was recently named an All-State Academic Team honorable mention selection by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA).

Starting with a pool of more than 400 nominees, the IHSA committee selects only 13 male and 13 female honorees for the team. Only an additional 50 received the honorable mention distinction. “This is a tremendous honor and I hope every student who was nominated takes a great deal of pride in all that they have accomplished,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “These students are the embodiment of what it means to take advantage of the entire high school experience. I am thankful to Caterpillar for providing the All-State Academic Team platform to honor and congratulate them.”

Every IHSA member school was invited to nominate one female student and one male student. Nominees needed to possess a minimum 3.50 grade point average on 4.0 scale after their 7th semester, have participated in at least two IHSA sponsored sports or activities during each of the last two years, and demonstrated outstanding citizenship. The nominations  were evaluated by a committee made up of IHSA principals, representatives of the Illinois Activities Directors Association, and representatives of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association.

Daniels has been a standout guard/forward for the RedHawk basketball team each winter, and was just named a 2017-2018 East Suburban Catholic Conference all-conference selection. He has also helped the track and field team to success each spring. He carries a challenging course load, and is enrolled in the school’s Senior Service Outreach Program. This double-period religion course allows students to travel off-campus each day to various schools, nursing homes, and other facilities. Daniels serves at Smith Village, a continuing care retirement community in Chicago’s Morgan Park neighborhood.

“David reflects the character on and off the court that we hope all of our student-athletes will display,” said Principal Larry Tucker ’79. “He’s been a great leader.”

Daniels and other honorees will be recognized at a banquet in Bloomington, Ill., on April 16, 2018.
