Marist High School’s speech team finished in first place at the Chicago Catholic Forensics League competition this past weekend. This win qualified them for the National Catholic Forensics League grand national tournament held this year in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., over Memorial Day weekend.
The students who will represent Marist are Ben Barry, Brian Canchola, Kelly Collins, Jack Golden, Cate Hynes, Morgan Johnson, Tim Johnson, and Alyssa Sorrentino.
At the Chicago competition, students’ individual results in the various categories helped the team capture the top prize. Collins was a tournament champion in original oratory. In declamation, Sorrentino took second, while Golden finished in fourth. Barry took third in humorous interpretation, while Tim Johnson finished in fourth. In duo interpretation, Hynes and Morgan Johnson took second, while Barry and Canchola finished third.
The team will spend the next two months preparing for the national tournament.
