Students earn literature award
Students enrolled in Marist’s College Prep Reading Skills course participated in the Illinois Secretary of State’s annual “Letters About Literature” contest in which students write a letter to the author of a book he or she has read. In the letter, the student explains how and why the book changed his or her view of the world.
A total of 4,675 letters were received by the Secretary’s office. Five Marist students were chosen as semi-finalists this year and 11 received an honorable mention certificate from the Secretary of State.
Marist students each selected a book from the annual Abe Lincoln Book list curated by Marist media specialist and librarian Kristy Rademacher and then wrote their letters to the author. Course teacher John Gonczy and senior peer leaders selected the strongest entries and they were submitted to the contest.
