Alumni honored by St. Joseph Seminary

Bill_Callaghan_and_Mike_KellyOn Tuesday, September 26, Bill Callaghan ’70 and Mike Kelly '89 were recognized by St. Joseph College Seminary.

Bill and Mike were two of three people honored with the Rerum Novarum Award, Rerum Novarum (Of New Things), the encyclical of Pope Leo XIII in 1891.  It was the first modern encyclical to focus on the dignity of the worker and the rights and duties of capital and labor.

Bill and Mike were honored for their witness to the principles of Rerum Novarum through their work and ministry to the Catholic Church. Bill is the co-owner of Henry Brothers, one of Chicagoland’s premier construction companies. Mike is general superintendent and CEO of the Chicago Park District.

Both Bill and Mike were eloquent in speaking about the importance of their Catholic faith in their lives.  Marist is very proud of them and the witness they give to how a Marist graduate can live his or her faith.

Also receiving the Rerum Novarum Award was Ralph A. Affrunti, president of the Chicago and Cook County Building and Construction Trade Council.

Well-known and loved Sister Rosemary Connolly, RSM was presented with the Mater Dei Award in recognition of her 48 years as Director of Misericordia, a multi-faceted program serving children and adults with developmental disabilities.
