Athletics Update April 17

The NCAA signing period resumes April 15th – August 1st for all Division I and II sports, including basketball and football.  The Marist NLI signing ceremony scheduled for April 15th has been postponed but we will recognize our spring signees once a determination has been made regarding a return to school.  The athletic director is receiving a list of spring signees and athletic bios from head coaches, at this time.  Marist student – athletes that do not compete on a Marist team but wish to be recognized as a college sport signee may email Mr. Eric Simpson directly.  Please provide name, sport, college or university name, and a brief summary of your athletic accomplishments.

Regarding the recruitment of student – athletes, please know the NCAA is allowing Division I and Division II spring sports participants to retain a year of eligibility.  However, many universities will not be bolstering scholarship budgets.  As a result, we anticipate a ‘tight market’ for senior student – athletes in some spring sports at the DI “mid-major” and DII levels.  When appropriate, our student – athletes should be advised to be proactive in communicating with college coaching staffs and providing stats, film, coaching recommendations, and academic information. The Marist athletic department, head coaches, and college counselors are available to assist students in the recruiting process.

ESCC AD’s met last week to discuss contingencies for spring sports.  The conference will be prepared to host athletic events should the shelter in place order be lifted this spring.  Should spring sports be cancelled this year, it was determined that the 2021 ESCC spring sport schedules will reflect the 2020 schedule as it relates to corresponding dates and home sites.  The fall and winter sports schedules will not be affected.  ESCC spring sport athletes will be eligible for academic all - conference awards based on the rosters submitted following this year’s try-outs.  This year’s ESCC HOF dinner honoring the 2010 Marist boys’ volleyball state champions has been postponed until next spring.

The IHSA recently surveyed schools regarding contingencies for the 2020 spring sport state series.  The IHSA is giving consideration for extending the state series into June.  However, they have determined sanctioned spring sports activities will not be allowed in July.

Summer camp registration is open but we are not accepting payments at this time.  Coaches have been given the option of revising camp dates.  The Marist websites and camp registration page will reflect revisions to our camp dates, as they are received.

Thanks to our coaches and student – athletes for staying positive, active, and engaged.  Posts on various social media platforms are a testament to all that you are doing to stay fit, hone your physical skills, and improve your mental approach to your respective sport.
