What’s in a Name?
During both Advent and Lent we’re often reminded of the many nicknames that have been given to Jesus of Nazareth, namely… Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace, Emmanuel, Christ, the Bread of Life, Lord, Savior, Redeemer, King of the Jews, Son of Man, Son of God, Lamb of God, Rabbi, the Alpha and the Omega, the Morning Star.
Here’s another one to add to your list… The Good Pelican.
Pelican? Yes, of course. And here’s why… in ancient times there was a legend that when food is scarce a pelican will take from its own flesh to feed its offspring, sacrificing itself for the good of its young. Sound familiar? It should, because that’s exactly how we understand the Eucharist… as the body and blood of the One who sacrificed himself for us.
Think about that the next time you find yourself hungry for some spiritual food.
