Jesus Known and Loved...
In yesterday's gospel (Matthew 16:13-20) Peter makes a wonderful declaration of faith in Jesus as the Christ, and Jesus rewards him… tells him that he will give him the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven.
Keys were important back then, and they still are. Since ancient times keys have represented Power and Authority, Wisdom and Success. Freedom and Captivity, not to mention Trust, Security, and Responsibility. More recently keys have come to represent Love... as in giving someone the key to your heart... which is exactly what Jesus gave to Peter.
In reality, keys only do two things, albeit two very important things… they Lock, and they Unlock. Or like Jesus said, they Bind, and they Loosen.
When Jesus asks the question, "Who do you say that I am?" will you be able to answer as confidently as Peter did? If not, maybe something inside of you needs to be unlocked and let loose. If you can answer Jesus’ question the way that Peter did… if you know Jesus as your Brother, your Healer, your Teacher …as your Savior…then perhaps you should lock up that conviction deep inside of you. Secure it. Protect it. Keep it close. Bind it to your heart.
Because one day you may find yourself standing on one side of a gate, with Jesus and Peter and the entire Communion of Saints on the other side. And you may be asked "Who do you say that I am?"
Your answer could very well be the key that unlocks that gate for you.
