William Walsh Clair
William (Bill) Walsh Clair grew up on the south side of Chicago, graduating from St. Gabriel’s School and Leo High School (the latter after a brief flirtation with the seminary). His two boys attended Marist High School as did three of his grandchildren. Bill supported them all in their academic, athletic, and arts endeavors at the school over the span of over thirty years.
Bill’s family is establishing the William Walsh Clair Memorial Scholarship to recognize students living in the city of Chicago for whom a private, Catholic education provides their best opportunity for future success. Bill served thirty-five years as a public school educator and coach, including twelve years as a principal. He worked tirelessly to provide a high-quality education to young people in the communities he served.
As principal, he would regularly see students who – like himself – would benefit from a secondary, Catholic education, and would pay out of his own pocket to ensure that those students got that opportunity at the high school level and more importantly, completed their secondary education. This scholarship continues his legacy of providing generosity and opportunity.
