When Marist football takes the field on Saturday night, there will be plenty to celebrate, including the memory of two special people who loved Marist.
On Friday, October 9, the American flag was raised on a brand new flag pole donated by the Jack Callahan Scholarship Fund in honor of the late Jack Callahan ’09, and his late grandfather, Jack Callahan, Sr. Senior quarterback Brendan Skalitzky, and his cousin Kevin Callahan ’11, Jack’s brother, were on hand to hoist the flag as family members, friends, and fans looked on.
Jack ’09 embodied the spirit of Marist. He was a wrestler and football player, and spread his never give up attitude everywhere he went. He died unexpectedly on his graduation day from Marist in May of 2009.
Jack, Sr. was the loving husband of Nancy, the proud father of five, including Colleen (Greg) Koerner, Jack ’81 (Joanne), Patti (Tom ‘82) Skalitzky, Matthew ‘85 (Deanne) and Terry ‘ 89 (Emily) Callahan. He was the doting grandfather of 20, and was a common visitor at Marist events to see many of them compete for the RedHawks. He passed away in January of 2014.
The Jack Callahan Scholarship Fund is run by his classmates, friends, and family members, and sponsors events to support the organization and honor Jack's memory. Each year, a graduating senior is voted by his or her classmates to receive the scholarship based on their school spirit and love of life.
Marist will host Waubonsie Valley in the IHSA state semifinals on Saturday, November 21, at 6pm. This is the first time Marist will host football semifinals.
