Class of 2020 Academic Achievements
Academics
National Merit Semifinalists
Marist High School Principal Dr. Kathryn Baal recently announced that seniors Colin Dillon (far left) and Thomas Kavanaugh were named National Merit Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in Evanston, Ill. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.
Both students reside in Oak Lawn and graduated from St. Catherine of Alexandria School.
While at Marist, Dillon has participated in math team, academic team, National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, student council, and the tennis program. For college, he is considering the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Purdue University. He will likely pursue an engineering-related field.
Kavanaugh is the captain of cross-country team and also competes in track and field in the spring. He is a member of the math team. His list of potential colleges includes Marquette University, Vanderbilt University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Purdue University. He plans to major in finance or engineering.
More than 1.5 million entrants are screened each year by the National Merit Scholarship Program after taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). There are approximately 16,000 National Merit Semifinalists in the U.S. and they can advance to Finalist standing by meeting high academic standards and all other requirements. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring.
Additionally, senior Jack Vulich was recognized as a National Merit Commended Student. Vulich, who is a graduate of St. Linus, has been involved in cross country, wrestling, math team, student ambassadors, National Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society. He is interested in the University of Illinois, Purdue University, and University of Michigan, where he is considering studying electrical engineering.
Commended Students represent the top 3-4% of scorers nationally on the PSAT. There are only 34,000 students who earn this distinction out of a pool of 1.5 million.

2020 Advancement Placement Scholars
Marist Principal Dr. Kathryn Baal announced that 100 current seniors and members of the class of 2020 have earned honors from the College Board for their performance on Advanced Placement (AP) exams from spring 2020. The AP Scholar Awards recognize high school students who have demonstrated exemplary college-level achievement on AP Exams.
Among Marist’s 100 scholars, there were seven National Scholars, which requires an AP score average of at least 4 and at least eight tests with scores of 4 or higher. There were 27 Scholars with Distinction, which is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. There were 13 Scholars with Honor, which is earned through an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. There were 60 AP Scholars, which represents students who received scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.
The College Board announced that starting with the May 2021 exam administration, they will no longer distribute National AP Scholar awards in an effort to reduce the burden on students by discontinuing an award that encourages students to take large numbers of exams.
Marist offers 22 AP courses, including Biology, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Computer Science A, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, European History, French Language and Culture, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Physics C-Mech., Physics C-E & M, Psychology, Spanish Language and Culture, Spanish Literature, Studio Art, Studio Art 2D, U.S. Government, U.S. History, and World History. Nineteen Marist teachers are certified AP instructors.
Congratulations to these students!

2020 CO-SALUTATORIAN NICOLE VIZ
Marist High School announced Jack Molenhouse and Nicole Viz as the class of 2020 co-salutatorians, tying for the second highest grade point average (GPA) in the class. Classmates Connor McNamara and Zachary Stack were named co-valedictorians with the highest GPA in the class.
Viz was involved in math team, chorus, and the fall plays and spring musicals. She was also a part of the school’s Pro-Life Club. “I had so much fun this year in Advanced Placement Physics because I had a lot of friends in the class and we learned so much about a topic that we were all genuinely interested in,” Viz explained. “I also really enjoyed my math classes with Mr. Glennon, especially BC Calculus every Friday this year.”
Viz will attend the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and major in engineering, possibly electrical or mechanical. “I feel thoroughly prepared for college after my four years at Marist, both academically and spiritually,” she said. “I’m very excited, but I know I’m going to miss all the friendships I’ve made with my brothers and sisters for life. Some of my favorite memories from Marist are going down to the state math team competition and then celebrating at Applebee’s afterwards.”
A Saints Cyril and Methodius graduate, Viz said she focused on getting the best grades. She admitted she thought it would be nice to be among the top students, but always valued the learning material first. Her message to her classmates is “I’m so thankful for how close we’ve all become as a class. I wish them all the best in their futures, I hope we can all stay in touch, and I’ll be praying for them.”
Marist’s class of 2020 graduated via a virtual ceremony on Sunday, May 24.
2020 CO-SALUTATORIAN JACK MOLENHOUSE
Marist High School announced Jack Molenhouse and Nicole Viz as the class of 2020 co-salutatorians, tying for the second highest grade point average (GPA) in the class. Classmates Connor McNamara and Zachary Stack were named co-valedictorians with the highest GPA in the class.
While at Marist, Molenhouse served as the president of the National Honor Society and as captain of the hockey team during his junior and senior years. Outside of Marist, he worked at Chicagoland Bicycle and as an ice hockey referee.
Much of his time was dedicated to classwork. “My goal was not to be at the top of the class,” he said. “I just wanted to learn as much as possible while still having fun and enjoying my time in high school.” And that he did. Molenhouse was especially fond of Mr. Glennon’s AP Calculus class, which, he said, “combined high level mathematics with jokes and humorous stories.”
“During my four years at Marist, I gained a lot of knowledge and developed a strong work ethic, both aptly preparing me for college,” Molenhouse said. Some of his best Marist memories were “messing” with science teacher Chris Lesher and “BC Fridays,” during which AP Calculus BC students stayed at school until 6 p.m. and shared dinner, laughs, and math. He also enjoyed the hockey tournaments from start to finish—the bus ride, the hotel time, exploring cities, and playing in competitive games.
Molenhouse, who graduated from Mt. Greenwood Elementary School and was named a National Merit Finalist, will attend Texas A&M University and plans on majoring in Aerospace Engineering.
To his classmates he said, “Thank you for an unforgettable (almost) 4 years together. I enjoyed every day of our time together.”
Marist’s class of 2020 graduated via a virtual ceremony on Sunday, May 24.

2020 CO-VALEDICTORIAN ZACHARY STACK
Marist High School recently named Zachary Stack and Connor McNamara co-valedictorians for the class of 2020. The two tied for the highest grade point average in the class of 397 students.
Stack, of Orland Park, had a goal to be one of the top students in the class. “Since the beginning of freshman year, I have put in hours of studying and doing homework to accomplish my goal,” Stack explained. “When life got stressful and tough, I was able to settle myself and complete my schoolwork to the best of my ability in large part due to my goal being front and center in my mind.”
His hard work paid off and he will attend Harvard University to pursue a degree in finance.
Stack, a graduate of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin School in Orland Hills, was a busy student during his time at Marist. He was a member of the math team for four years. The team qualified for state each year. He contributed three years to the academic team and Spanish club and one year to Model United Nations. He was inducted into the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society, serving as the vice-president of the latter.
Athletically, he played basketball for Marist his freshman year and baseball freshman and sophomore year.
Outside of Marist, he made the most of his summers. He worked as a laborer at logistics company Dynamic3Pl during the summer of 2018 and as a treasury operations intern at Citadel LLC in Chicago in 2019. He also worked on the behalf of others, founding the nonprofit organization OPBaseball4all with a mission to make the game of baseball inclusive for all. Stack worked to raise money to build a specially surfaced ADA compliant baseball field for people with physical and mental impairments.
Some of the best memories Stack has come from his math classes and time with the math team. “I really enjoyed BC Calculus at Marist due to the camaraderie and rigor of the course,” he said. “The three-hour class after school on Fridays was extremely memorable and incredibly fun. The complication of each problem fed into my desire to learn more and more and challenged my mathematical aptitude.”
He also looks back fondly on time with his fellow “mathletes,” remembering team dinners, trips down state, and strong friendships.
“Marist has prepared me especially well for the next chapter of my life,” Stack said. “Marist’s curriculum has helped me develop critical and logical thinking skills through the many challenging and demanding classes. Furthermore, Marist has instilled many different Catholic beliefs and teachings in me, and has helped me become a faith-filled leader who values integrity, honesty, and trustworthiness in all those I encounter.”
Marist’s class of 2020 graduated via a virtual ceremony on Sunday, May 24. Stack shared some comments during the event.
2020 CO-VALEDICTORIAN CONNOR MCNAMARA
Marist High School recently named Zachary Stack and Connor McNamara co-valedictorians for the class of 2020. The two tied for the highest grade point average in the class of 397 students.
McNamara (pictured), a graduate of St. Michael School in Orland Park, made the most of his time at Marist. He competed on the math team for four years. The team qualified for state each year. He also served as a student ambassador for three years, welcoming prospective families to Marist’s campus.
Athletically, he was a member of the baseball and tennis teams for two seasons and the basketball team for one season.
He received the esteemed Block M Award for his contributions to the math and tennis teams.
A National Merit Finalist, McNamara said being at the top of the class was always a goal that helped him do his best every day. Now, he is ready for the next chapter in life. “I feel that all my Marist experiences on sports teams, in the classroom, and everything else, has prepared us for any of the challenges we will face in college,” he said.
Many of his favorite memories revolve around math. He enjoyed BC Calculus, a course that met for three hours each Friday. The math team was a great source of pride for McNamara, too. “My most special Marist memory is going to the state competition for math team every year at University of Illinois. It was always one of the best days of the year, and I was disappointed when it got canceled this year,” McNamara said.
McNamara will return to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign this fall where he will pursue a degree in computer science engineering.
He is proud of his classmates, noting their positive attitudes and work ethic. “We have shown that we will be able to handle anything the future gives us,” he said.
Marist’s class of 2020 graduated via a virtual ceremony on Sunday, May 24. McNamara shared some comments during the event.

2019 ILLINOIS STATE SCHOLARS

Marist High School principal Larry Tucker recently announced that the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) named 64 Marist seniors Illinois State Scholars. This brings the total of Illinois State Scholars from Marist to 614 over the past nine years.
Illinois State Scholars represent approximately the top ten percent of high school seniors from more than 700 high schools across the state. Illinois State Scholars possess strong academic potential and are chosen based on a combination of exemplary ACT or SAT test scores and sixth semester class rank.
“We are so proud of our Illinois State Scholars,” Tucker said. “This is a powerful reflection of the caliber of students at our school, as well as the strong curriculum and preparation our teachers provide to help students excel.”
Congratulations to the Class of 2020 members who were named Illinois State Scholars:

CLASS OF 2020 HIGHLIGHTS
Marist High School’s class of 2020 marks the 54th graduating class for the South Side Catholic school that serves young men and women by preparing them for higher education and life. Despite the unexpected end to the 2020-21 school year, the class continued the school’s tradition of excellence. Commencement exercises were held virtually May 24, 2020.
The talented class boasted co-valedictorians Connor McNamara and Zachary Stack and co-salutatorians Jack Molenhouse and Nicole Viz. McNamara and Viz will attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, while Stack will attend Harvard University and Molenhouse will attend Texas A&M University. The four were National Merit Finalists along with classmate Daniel Winstead. Additionally, Brianna Brown, Adam Hermann, Kyle Kohn, and Kenneth Polit were named National Merit Commended Students. Molenhouse and Kohn both scored 36, the top score on the ACT—a rare feat.
Marist boasted 64 Illinois State Scholars, recognizing the top ten percent of seniors in the state. Numerous students were named ACT scholars, Advanced Placement Scholars, and received prestigious awards and scholarships. Quinn Kelly and Ivan Diaz were awarded the esteemed Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship, while Gervhona Lemon earned the Posse Foundation Scholarship.
Members of the class sent out 2,655 applications and were accepted at 375 colleges and universities. They will matriculate on campuses across the country this fall. The group was awarded more than $45 million in scholarship monies. Three members of the class will join the military. Dominic Bruinius and Ellie Andersen will join the U.S. Navy, while William Curtin will join the U.S. Marines.
Grace Maxwell and Caleb Davis were selected as the Faculty Award recipients. Voted on by the faculty each year, the award recognizes academic excellence, leadership, and dedication to Marist.
At the heart of their Marist experience was spiritual growth. Members of the class participated in retreats and liturgy planning. Students planned and executed countless service projects and fundraisers, including spearheading the Relay for Life which raised $45,000 for the American Cancer Society in 2020 alone, and running countless service projects and drives for those in need. More than 200 members of the class were enrolled in one of the school’s two unique religion courses. Students in the senior service program provided daily community service at more than 18 area organizations, including OSF Little Company of Mary Hospital, Elim Christian Services, and several nearby Catholic grammar schools. The peer leadership program allows seniors to provide academic support to students in classes, assisting teachers to ensure student success.
Athletically, individuals and teams were strong performers. Senior members of the girls’ volleyball team were part of back-to-back state championships in 2017 and 2018 and placed third in state in 2019. The boys’ volleyball team captured the state title in 2019. The cheerleading program brought home three state trophies in the past three years, finishing as the state runner-up in 2018 and 2019 and in third place in 2020. This year’s seniors contributed to softball’s fourth place state finish in 2017 and 2019. Football advanced to the state semifinal for the second straight year. Rugby brought home a fourth place state trophy in 2019. Poms made an impressive appearance at state. Wrestling, boys’ track, girls’ tennis, girls’ track, girls’ cross country, and boys’ cross country advanced individuals to state. Teams made deep runs into the playoffs and racked up regional, conference, and sectional titles. Forty-eight members of the class committed to college athletic programs.
After the bell rang each day, these seniors participated in clubs and activities, sharing their leadership and expertise with the school community. The speech team advanced to the National Catholic Forensic League Grand Tournament, though it was unable to be held. Members of the school newspaper garnered dozens of awards in several categories. Student Council members planned a variety of events and activities throughout the year. The broadcasting program grew with bi-weekly news segments and a talk show. Students found their niche, making clubs from fencing to Ultimate Frisbee and cooking to mock trial a meaningful part of their experience. Academic Team won the regional and conference, while chess competed at state. Marist seniors were leaders on the math team, winning the regional and qualifying once again for the state tournament, though it was unable to be held.
The fine arts flourished, as seniors produced art, music, and theater that captivated their audiences. As always, the famed Marist marching band provided the soundtrack for four great years of high school. The band performed at home and made three spring tours in the United States. The theater guild produced a fall drama and spring musical to the delight of audiences, while students shared their creativity through photography, ceramics, digital design, drawing, and more.
Marist seniors embraced technology, too, undertaking engineering, coding, robotics, architecture, and other endeavors. Additionally, seniors took advantage of the Beeson Science Center and Our Lady Queen of the Heavens Planetarium through innovative and hands-on courses in forensics, astronomy, anatomy, and traditional science branches.
Many students took advantage of the school’s Explore Program, attending talks from industry leaders, visiting college campuses, shadowing at workplaces, and participating in internships.
Marist proudly sends off the class of 2020 to make Jesus known and loved in the world, while making a difference in every industry and community.
2020 IDEA PITCH WINNERS
The winning teams for Marist’s Innovative Design for Entrepreneurial Applications (IDEA) class were announced by Principal Larry Tucker ’79 on May 15. All of the teams worked extremely hard this year developing their problem-solving skills that will be carried through their college years and beyond.
Senior and junior students enrolled in this course create and fully develop their own product or service. Student teams work through the process of ideation, market research, and business plan development. They learn how to create a product that solves a problem, customer input/data usage, competitive considerations, financial modeling, marketing, and operational execution. This is a hands-on course created to allow students to imagine, design, construct, market, and refine their own business ventures.

This is a school year like none other. So is Marist’s class of 2020. Despite the challenges presented right now, these 397 young men and women continue to learn, continue to pray, continue to serve. They continue to be Marist. They are a talented group with skills in the classroom, on the fields and courts, on the stage, and in the studio. As they traverse the final quarter of their senior year, we celebrate each of them for all they have done to bring honor, glory, and fame to Marist.
Marist is working to recognize these graduates. You can learn more about each one of them by following the #MaristSeniorSpotlight series on the school’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages. A small group of seniors will be highlighted each day from April 20 to May 23.
