A Global Perspective Through Language

The World Language Department at Marist High School is committed to fostering authentic learning experiences, in and out of class, that create linguistic, social, and cultural passageways towards the life-long learning of our three target languages and cultures – French, Italian and Spanish. The basic curriculum reinforces, and will continuously capstone, the knowledge and skills acquired in other academic, vocational, and technical disciplines, while strengthening the school-wide initiative to “Teach- Across- The- Curriculum”. The four (4) year learning plan will produce service-minded, informed, skillful and effective communicators, in the target language as well as their own, spanning a multitude of communities and world cultures, promoting the fundamental goals of a Catholic, college preparatory institution.

Marist is a proud participant in the IL Seal of Biliteracy Program. The State Seal of Biliteracy program is open to all students and recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in English and in one or more other world languages. Students who meet the requirements receive a seal on their HS diploma and can earn credits from Illinois public universities and colleges.

Marist students take the ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) in their Spanish, Italian, and French classes each year.  Students can meet the world language requirement by scoring Intermediate 5 or higher on the reading, listening, speaking, and writing sections in addition to a qualifying English language score on the ACT, SAT, or AP English Language and Composition. The exam costs approximately $20 for all four required components. Students who speak other languages (Polish, Greek, Arabic, etc) can also submit proof of proficiency in those languages to meet the world language component for the Seal of Biliteracy (see list of ISBE approved assessments here).

For more information about the IL Seal of Biliteracy, please contact the World Language Department Chair Daniel Brant (br**********@****st.net).
