2025–2026 Athletics Season Recaps

FALL 2025
Boys’ Cross Country
The Boys’ Cross Country team took 3rd place at the ESCC Conference meet. This season we had a brand new varsity squad and Coach Maslanka was especially proud of the way our new/younger runners stepped up. Some of our athletes could not run more than 3 miles at the start of the summer, and by the end of the season they were running more than double that! Thank you to our 2025 captains – Matthew Forbes & Ben Klancnik – and welcome to our 2026 captains – Kevin Finn & Owen Butler.
Girls’ Cross Country
The Girls’ Cross Country team had an excellent season. The team worked on running for each other and focused on the importance of running for their team instead of themselves. They pushed through the uncomfortable when it came to hard races. The team won the Jimmy Daniels Invite in October which set them up for success at Regionals where they placed third as a team and advanced to the IHSA Sectional championships. Junior Isabella Brennan qualified for the State Championships in Peoria and beat her lifetime best record by 16 seconds on an incredibly challenging course. The team culture was incredible where runners were looking forward to practicing with their teammates.
Flag Football
The Flag Football team finished with a record of 10-8 and lost in the regional final. Claire Vitellaro was the 2026 RedHawk Award recipient. The RedHawk Award is given to the player who best exemplifies what it means to be a great teammate. The winner brings a positive attitude to practice every day, gives maximum effort in everything that they do, picks their teammates up when they are down or frustrated, and celebrates with them after great plays on offense or defense. Rylee O’Connor was named team MVP. Rylee was a starter both on offense and defense. She was one of the leading receivers on the team and was also a standout defensive back for the team.
Football
The Football team faced a lot of adversity and setbacks early on but our team stayed together, never quit, and battled back to finish the season 4-1. We had so many different kids step up this year in different roles and great leadership that helped us stay together. Coach Fitz was extremely proud of our kids’ efforts and resilience.
Boys’ Golf
The Boys’ Golf team had a strong season that started with a 2nd place finish at the Nazareth Invite. The team finished 5th in the ESCC, finished 2nd at the Regional Tournament and advanced to Sectionals as a team for the 18th year in a row. This is a very young team with great potential, so the future should be bright for the RedHawks.
Girls’ Golf
Marist Girls’ Golf placed third at Regionals, securing a trip to Sectionals. Earlier in the season, the team also earned a first-place finish at the Andrew Invitational. Molly Hennessy was named All-Conference, and Avery Mullaghy received honorable mention recognition.
Boys’ Soccer
For this year’s Boys’ Soccer season, it was a season of ups and downs. We played well in several of our tournaments including a gritty effort in the BodyArmor Tournament and fought to win the championship of our bracket for the first time ever. Senior Trinton Falls was recognized as an All-Sectional Player and Junior Jack Hiedemann was named All-Conference and an All-Sectional Honorable Mention and sophomore Felip Lopez was also All-Conference. Senior Declan Broderick earned All-Sectional Sportsmanship honors and Senior Billy Petto was named to the All-Sectional All-Academic Team.
Girls’ Swimming
The Girls’ Swimming team has some really dedicated young swimmers who are rebuilding with determination, hard work, and a fun attitude. Freshman Abigail Guisinger set three new school records this season in the 50 Freestyle, 200 Individual Medley, and the 100 backstroke.
Girls’ Tennis
The Marist Girls’ Tennis season highlights include two 1st place tournament finishes, both the varsity and JV securing a 2nd place finish in the ESCC Conference Tournament, and a 1st place finish in the Sandburg Sectional (two sectional wins in a row)! Also, Helena Klooster, Natalie Bridgeman, Molly Haynes and Claire Neely were IHSA state qualifiers! Helena competed against the best players in the IHSA state tournament and earned an impressive 2nd place finish!
Girls’ Volleyball
The Girls’ Volleyball team finished the season 36-5, earning a back-to-back State Championship title! Elayna Davidson was named the State Finals MVP, Taylor Berg named State Finals All-Tournament. Cassidy Cage, Elayna Davidson, and Savanah Weathers were named All-State. Savanah Weathers was also named the Southtown Player of the Year! The team finished top 5 in the nation. This was a special team from the start led by a rare group of seniors who led a historic run to the State Title. They had a target on their back all season long as defending champs and stepped up to the challenge and did it their way. Every player stepped up when needed in the biggest games and this truly was a Team Championship.

Boys’ Basketball (img)
For the first time in school history, the Boys’ basketball team won the state championship! The boys 2025-26 basketball team finished the season with a school record for wins with a record of 33-5. The team won the Thanksgiving tournament, the Centralia Holiday Tournament, the Battle of Pulaski vs. Brother Rice, and for the first time in 45 years, won a Sectional Championship! This team faced some adversity due to injuries, but was able to come together as a group and finish the season ranked as the #1 team in the state and the #26 ranked team in the country! This group held the #9 team in the country, Benet, to 28 points in the state championship game. The defense was a representative of the toughness and resilience of this group.
Girls’ Basketball
The Marist Girls’ Basketball team enjoyed an outstanding season marked by hard work, determination, and impressive accomplishments. Finishing with a 26–9 record, the team captured a Regional Championship and claimed multiple tournament titles along the way. Competing against one of the toughest schedules in the state of Illinois, the team remained competitive in every matchup, with losses coming to only six different schools throughout the season. Individually, Lily Porter earned recognition as a member of the ESCC All-Conference Team, while Lucy Cosme received Honorable Mention honors. The team was guided by the leadership of two irreplaceable seniors, Lucy Cosme and Livi Cosme, whose contributions helped shape the program’s success. This group will be remembered for its resilience, unity, supportiveness, and genuine care for one another—qualities that defined their remarkable season.
Boys’ Wrestling
Marist Wrestling delivered another powerhouse season, capturing both the ESCC Conference Championship and the IHSA Regional Championship while finishing ranked No. 6 in Class 3A in Illinois.
Twelve RedHawks earned All-Conference honors, showcasing the depth and strength of the program: Elio Gil, Crue Hatchell, Dylan Weber, Te’Jon Beals, Axel Rodriguez, Jaxon Jorgensen, Tommy Fidler, Ethan Sonne, Jonathan Fields, Ronin Haran, Tom O’Brien, and Jack Watson.
Six wrestlers advanced to the IHSA Individual State Finals — Elio Gil, Te’Jon Beals, Axel Rodriguez, Jaxon Jorgensen, Tommy Fidler, and Ethan Sonne — proving Marist’s ability to compete at the highest level.
Tommy Fidler battled his way to an All-State finish, placing 6th at 150 pounds. And for the third straight season, Marist crowned an individual state champion as Ethan Sonne captured the IHSA State Championship at 157 pounds — continuing the RedHawks’ tradition of excellence on the biggest stage.
Girls’ Wrestling
The Girls’ Wrestling team had a phenomenal season! This season the team traveled to Ohio to compete in the Women of Ironman tournament which is an elite national tournament. The girls were fierce and most of the girls won a few matches at this tournament, proving that Marist Girls’ Wrestling is an up and coming program loaded with talented athletes. Senior Sarah Parker placed 6th in this national tournament. More than their talent, hard work, and dedication, this team created a true family spirit and culture that we hope continues going forward. This season we had 2 state qualifiers. Sarah Parker qualified at 170 lb weight class and Ava Enright made Marist Girls’ Wrestling history by being the first girls wrestler to place in the IHSA State Tournament, earning a 6th place medal at 120 lbs.
Girls’ Bowling
Marist Girls’ Bowling placed first in our regular season matches in our South Division and second overall out of 11 teams. Gianna Valenti (2028) and Jane Hornung (2029) qualified for the GCAC All Conference team.
Boys’ Bowling
The Boys’ Bowling team had one of its best seasons since covid. The team was lead by Seniors Billy Bautista, Edwin Matelski, Christian Molinari and Ronan Carmody. The team finished 3rd in the CCL South standings and finished 6th overall in the conference tournament. Senior Billy Bautista was named Chicago Catholic League All Conference. The first time a Marist Bowler has been named all conference in over a decade. Billy advanced to the sectional championship as an individual and fell just a few pins shy of being a state qualifier. The varsity and JV teams saw a tremendous contribution from freshmen bowlers. The future looks bright for this group.
Poms and Dance
This season was one to remember for this incredibly talented team. From the very first rehearsal to their final performance, they showed what it truly means to work hard, stay committed, and support one another through every challenge that came their way. Their dedication and passion shined brightest on the big stage at the Illinois Drill Team Association State Tournament, where they delivered two stunning routines in the pom and lyrical categories. With grace, emotion, and technical excellence, the team earned an impressive 3rd place finish in the lyrical category. This season also highlighted the incredible individual talent within the team. Six dancers (Arnesia Lovelace, Tessa Schultz, Maddie Sise, Latanya Smith, Annie Tortorello, and Emmy Urban) advanced to the Solo State Finals-an achievement that speaks to the depth of skill and dedication across the entire program. Among those finalists, Maddie Sise earned an extraordinary honor of placing 2nd in the entire state tournament. This group leaves the season not only as accomplished performers, but as a team that truly became a family.

Marist High School is proud to welcome three new staff members to our Hockey program for the 2026-27 school year. All three coaches bring years of hockey experience both as players and as coaches and we are proud to bring them to our RedHawk family: Head Coach Keith Burchett, Assistant Coach Declan Hartnett and Assistant Coach Tim Lunz ‘02.
Cheer
The Marist Cheerleading team had a season defined by growth, resilience, and strong team spirit. The team delivered a standout performance at the IHSA Sectional, placing in the top five and advancing to the IHSA State Finals. After overcoming adversity on day one of the state competition, the team came back determined and earned a spot on day two, ultimately finishing in the top 10 in the IHSA 4A division. From game day performances to competition season, the athletes continued to grow in confidence, leadership, and skill while proudly representing Marist High School.
SPRING 2026
Baseball
The Baseball team finished up the season with a 24-13 record over all. The team won its second consecutive ESCC conference championship. We also won our first Regional since the 2023 season. Our all conference players were Ryan Lawlor, Collin Lawlor, JP Gainer, Ryan Hinde, Ryan Rosas, Mark Coffey and Matt Molesky. Collin Lawlor was selected 2nd team All Area and Ryan Lawlor Honorable mention.
Softball
Marist Softball finished the season 37-2, ranked 20 in the nation, and finished 3rd in state! The team won the ESCC Championship for the 8th consecutive year in a row. All conference players include Soleil Tate, Ellie Holmstrom, Layla Peters, Lexi Kyros, Maddie Rogers, Savannah Jones, and Layla Termunde. Soleil Tate was named ESCC Conference Player of Year! All State players include Soleil Tate, Lexi Kyros, Layla Termunde, and Maddie Rogers.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The 2026 RedHawks were rich in talent, and will go down as more of the more decorated teams in school history. With a record of 13-8, the RedHawks played anyone, anytime, and anywhere in ’26 including the top 3 team medalists. This team took 2nd in the final year of the ESCC, which included 7 players to make the final All-conference team: Thomas Hollowell, Aidan McDonnell, Cormac Molloy, Marco Longo, Austin Warren, Finn Kelly, and Owen Kearney. Lastly, despite the injuries that tried to slow down this team; the RedHawks persevered and raced all the way to the Sectional Semifinals with a win over Mount Carmel in the quarterfinals. In addition, this team had 4 All-State players including 2 2nd team selections in Aidan McDonnell and Austin Warren, and two honorable mentions in Thomas Hollowell and Finn Kelly.
Girls’ Lacrosse
It was a history year for our team: it was the first to trip to State, first final four appearance and finished 4th in the state tournament. It was also the first time winning a Super Sectional title. Over all record was 16-8. Both our JV and Freshman team were undefeated going 15-0. We had 2 players named ALL STATE: Tessa Dowling who will be playing D1 at Coastal Carolina in the fall and Erin O’Neill who is another D1 player headed to Central Michigan in the fall of 2027. Isabel Colón was our leading scorer with 43 goals, Tessa Dowling broke the school record with 90 Ground Balls. There were 4 All Conference players: Tessa Dowling, Isabel Colón, Abby McClorey and Erin O’Neill. Also for the first time we will have 16 girls playing college lacrosse.
Boys’ Rugby
This was Marist Rugby’s 11th year and the team had another successful run. The Varsity team finished second in state for the second year in a row with a 7-1-1 record and captured the Conference, Regional and Sectional Championship along the way. The Varsity team was led by seniors Tommy O’Brien, Tommy Fiddler, Eddie Scheel, jr., Marquis Steel and Anthony Orshonsky. The JV team had a strong year as well finishing with a 5-1 record and the only loss was in the state semi-finals. The team was led by Henry Konrath, Jake Czerminski and John Kratzer.
Girls’ Soccer
Girls Soccer had the second best record in history at 15-4-2. We started 4-0 and made the Windy City Championship after beating the top teams in the area. This team was strong defensively all year post 13 shutouts out of 22 games and only allowing 3 teams to score multiple goals against us. We beat defending state champions St Ignatius and Mother McAuley a second time this year and for the 12th straight time, beat top 25 team Maine South to win the Body Armour championship, and finished 3rd in conference.
Our team was recognized all year in the Southtown at #2 in the area, we were ranked as high as #14 in the State on Maxpreps. We were honored with 6 All confernce players: Julia Skol (ESCC Defensive player of the year), Addison Woodward, Vivian Rybak, Mia Sherry, Anna Budz, and Elianna Tzotzos. 3 players were elected All Area: Julia, Addison, and Mia. Most importantly Julia Skol was chosen as ALL STATE, and Addison and Mia were selected All Sectional. It was an amazingly successful season and we return a core of starters that we will add to a strong recruiting class to continue to play competitive soccer heading into the new GCAC conference. Go Redhawks!!.
Boys’ Tennis
The Boys’ Tennis team played very well all season. Highlights include finishing in 2nd place in the Stagg Sectional Tournament and qualifying Max Macey, Andrew Hollinger and Peter Schipma for IHSA state competition. The future looks bright for Marist boys tennis!
Boys’ Track & Field
It was a rebuilding year for boys track, but it was also a season of great success. In the final championship meet for the East Suburban Catholic Conference, the RedHawks placed third in the varsity meet. At the same time, the Redhawks freshmen and sophomores were dominating the ESCC Frosh Soph meet, winning six of 18 events. After the conference meet, the team moved on the the Lyons Township IHSA Sectional championship, qualifying three individual athletes for the state meet. Berezowski won the high jump with a personal best of 1.88m (6’2”). Finn placed second in the 800m (2:01.04). Gunn placed second in the long jump (6.51m, 21’4.25”). Other sectional top-six medal winners were Daily (3rd HJ), Butler (5th 1600m), and Hunter (6th 100m).
Girls’ Track & Field
Talea Ferguson ‘28 broke the school triple jump record twice this season (broke her own record the second time). Rose Cosme ‘27 qualified for the State championship 800 meter run for the third year in a row. She ran a 2:17 to finish in the top 40 in the state. Overall, the team had some pretty good PRs and finished second at the Richards meet in April.
Boys’ Volleyball
The Boys Volleyball team finished their season 35-7. The team earned ESCC Conference Champions for the 11th straight year in the row, Regional & Sectional Champions. For the 3rd straight season, they made it to the IHSA State Tournament, finishing 3rd in State. Michael Forbes was named the ESCC Player of Year and 1st Team All State. Briggs Corona was named the Daily Southtown Player of Year and 2nd Team All State.
