Marist Students Take Field Trip to Pipefitters Local 597 Training Center
On November 2, 18 Marist students had the opportunity to visit the Pipefitters Local 597 Training Center in Mokena for an informative and exciting look into the world of skilled trades.
During the visit, students learned about the qualifications and application process for becoming a pipefitter, as well as the four apprenticeship programs offered by Local 597: Building Trades, HVAC Building Controls, HVAC Service, and Hybrid Welding. They also gained valuable insight into the financial and professional benefits of a career in the trades, including starting wages, health insurance, 401(k) benefits, and a pension plan.
One detail that especially caught our students’ attention was learning that apprentices begin earning a paycheck for their training after just their first month in the program! Students also received helpful advice about preparing for an apprenticeship, including taking introductory courses at a local community college or seeking summer employment with a contractor. Even some entry-level experience in the trades can help strengthen an apprenticeship application.
The highlight of the visit was a tour of Local 597’s impressive 200,000-square-foot training facility! Students explored specialized training areas featuring welding and fabrication stations, HVAC and refrigeration equipment, and advanced building automation and control systems. The facility provides apprentices with the technical knowledge and hands-on experience needed to develop their skills and succeed in the industry.
Our RedHawks left with a much better understanding of the opportunities available through the skilled trades and what it takes to build a successful career in this field. The message was clear: with hard work, dedication, and a willingness to learn, the possibilities are tremendous!
At Marist, we are proud to help our students explore every opportunity, discover their potential, and recognize that success doesn’t follow just one path!
