Coach Dan Garvey Gym Floor Project
Recently, a very generous donor (who requested anonymity) stepped forward with an exciting challenge related to funding a project here at Marist.
The gym floor at Marist High School is the original playing surface, which was installed when the school opened in 1963! For several years, Marist has invested a fair amount of resources into repairing the floor from water damage and buckling. Professionals have told us we’ve gotten our money’s worth, and now it’s time for a new gym floor.
And at the same time, this past September, we mourned the loss of one of the great Marist legends: Coach Dan Garvey. All of us who are alums fondly remember the goodness of Dan Garvey, and we will be forever grateful to him for his years of service to Marist. Dan Garvey, along with the gym floor, came to Marist in the 1960s! Besides being one of the first lay employees, Dan was the first men’s basketball coach in the history of Marist and, as we know, spent most of his thirty-five-year career on that original floor. Our generous donor would like to honor Coach Garvey by having his name enshrined on the new surface once installed. After abatement and removal of the old floor, the cost of a new gym floor is $600,000.
There is a separate campaign to honor Coach Gene Nolan.
The donor is presenting a challenge to all of us: He and his wife will match, dollar for dollar, any 2-year pledge or direct gift up to $200,000 to Marist to fund the gym floor project IF WE CAN raise $200,000 by January 31st, 2025.

The mission of Marist is alive and well today. As we continue the pursuit of academic excellence in the classroom, our Marist athletes are competing at the highest level in high school sports, too.
All of us have been blessed through our experience as students at Marist High School and being formed by some of the all-time greats like Dan Garvey. Thank you in advance for your consideration and participation in this exciting challenge. Generations of Marist students will benefit significantly from your goodness!
