Marist High School announced that Ed Ernst will be the new boys’ track and field head coach.
Welcome, Ed!
Ed Ernst joins the Marist coaching community as the new boys’ track and field head coach. Previously, Ernst coached cross country and track and field at Saint Ignatius for 20 years. He is excited about taking on a bigger team at Marist and getting to coach in the East Suburban Catholic Conference.
Taking the Marist coaching position is also special to Ernst on a personal level as he had gotten to know the late Coach Jon Gordon and the late Coach Wayne Holloway. Coach Gordon was the boys head cross country and track and field coach at Marist for 6 years. Coach Holloway was an assistant coach for the Marist boys track and field team. Ernst knew the two men through high school coaching for 25 years.
“These boys have faced some real tragedy in the past year, losing two beloved coaches in Jon Gordon and Wayne Holloway. Those two remarkable men were a big reason the team has been so successful,” said Ernst. “The first thing I will tell the Marist track boys is that Coach Gordon and Coach Holloway were also pretty good coaching friends of mine, too, going back 25 years. It makes me feel very special to be the one to step into their shoes as coach of their team.”
Ernst is excited to get started with the athletes at Marist and recognizes this sport is a great opportunity for students to get involved!
“Track and field is a great sport, because we give a uniform to everybody who wants to join us and we bring together all different kinds of kids to build our team and make it successful, said Ernst. “In track and field we can find a spot for everybody. You just have to be ready and willing to try something new.”
We are incredibly excited to have Ed Ernst at Marist. We look forward to an amazing 2024 track and field season!
