Marist High School is proud to announce that seniors John Alfano, Audrey Banach, Kenneth Dewes, Nicholas Frenzel, Jayden Thomas, and Olivia Winstead were named Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in Evanston, Ill. Commended Students place among the top 50,000 students who enter the competition. Approximately, 1.5 million high school students enter the program each year.
John Alfano (St. Christopher)
John is involved in the Marist Band, Math Team, Academic Team, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Amor Vitae, Morning Music Ministry and the Engineering Club. His favorite classes have been the Computer Science classes with Mrs. Fey. “I’m really grateful to receive this commendation and grateful for all my teachers,” said John.
Audrey Banach (Independence Junior High)
Audrey is a member of the Math Team, National Honor Society and Engineering Club. She also is on the Girls’ Lacrosse Team and Girls’ Cross Country Team. Her favorite class is Spanish because of the collaboration with her classmates everyday while learning a new language.
Kenneth Dewes (St. Catherine of Alexandria)
Kenneth is a member of the Marist Band, Jazz Band, the Math Team, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, and the Engineering Club.
Nicholas Frenzel (St. Gerald)
Nicholas is a member of the Engineering Club, Math Team, Italian National Honor Society, and National Honor Society. He also played on the Boys’ Soccer team for 3 years and is a member of the Boys’ Track & Field team. Nicholas’ favorite class is math because he enjoys the logical thinking involved and finding new ways to solve problems. “I am very grateful to be recognized as a National Merit Commended Student. I appreciate the support and opportunities I have received from my teachers and the Marist community, which have helped me grow academically and pursue the subjects I enjoy,” said Nicholas.
Olivia Winstead (Most Holy Redeemer)
Olivia is a member of the Math Team, Theater Guild, Academic Team, and Book Club. She is also a member of the Girls’ Cross Country team. Her current favorite class is AP Literature because she is a big fan of the books they’re reading. “I’d just like to say how grateful I am for this recognition,” said Olivia.
Jayden Thomas (Cardinal Joseph Bernardin)
Jayden is the Founder/President of the Engineering Club, a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Math Team, and Investment Club. His favorite class is Chemistry because he enjoys learning about what comprises the world around us. “I am grateful for this recognition and the incredible support I have received from my family, teachers, and peers,” said Jayden.
