Marist Faculty Take on the Chicago Marathon for a Cause

When the 2025 Bank of America Chicago Marathon begins, three members of the Marist community will be among the 40,000 runners racing through the city streets. For Vic Trevino, Robyn McNaughton, and Jason Berta, the marathon represents more than miles. Each is running in support of a charity that reflects Marist’s values of faith, service, and perseverance.

Vic Trevino, retired math teacher, former department chair, and boys’ and girls’ soccer coach who now tutors part time at Marist, is running his first marathon for the Northern Illinois Food Bank, which provides more than 200,000 meals each day to residents across the region.
“The Chicago Marathon combines my love for the city and my love of running,” Vic said. “It’s truly an honor to run for others and be part of something bigger.” He began training in May and has logged more than 500 miles, often before sunrise. “If it’s not raining, it’s not training,” he joked about one memorable 14-mile thunderstorm run.

Robyn McNaughton, a counselor in Marist’s Student Services Department and coach for the girls cross country team, is running for Nourishing Hope, a Chicago-based nonprofit that provides food, counseling, and social services to neighbors in need.
“I wanted to challenge myself with a large goal that I knew would take months of commitment,” Robyn said. “The day of the marathon is the celebration of all that hard work.” She credits her student-athletes and colleagues for keeping her motivated. “Shoutout to the girls cross country team and my fellow coaches for being as invested in my training as I have been.”

Jason Berta, a math teacher, assistant golf coach, and moderator of Marist’s Mock Trial Club, is running for the American Cancer Society. A former patent lawyer who found his calling in the classroom, Berta says this race holds personal meaning as he runs to honor loved ones affected by cancer.

Each of these faculty members demonstrates the strength, faith, and determination that define the Marist community. We are proud to cheer them on as they represent Marist across 26.2 miles of Chicago’s neighborhoods.

Jason, Robyn and Vic showed off their medals at school following the marathon:

Go RedHawks! Bold. Brave. Marist.
