A Court That Honors Marist’s Past, Present, and Future

On Friday, September 5, the Marist community gathered for a special moment in school history: the unveiling and blessing of the newly renovated gym floor. Father Tom Hurley ’85 led the blessing, marking the official completion of a transformative project that began in 2024.

The new court not only modernizes a vital campus space but also serves as a lasting tribute to three individuals whose impact on Marist will never be forgotten: Coach Dan Garvey, Coach Gene Nolan ’92, and Paul Simmons ’11.

Honoring Coach Dan Garvey

Coach Garvey was Marist’s first men’s basketball coach and one of the school’s earliest lay employees. Over his 35-year career, he built a reputation as a mentor and leader, shaping generations of student-athletes. Following his passing in 2023, a generous anonymous donor ensured his legacy would endure by naming the new floor in his honor.

Honoring Coach Gene Nolan ’92

A standout student-athlete turned head coach, Gene Nolan ’92 is Marist’s all-time winningest basketball coach. Known for his leadership, integrity, and commitment to excellence, Nolan guided the RedHawks through ten 20-win seasons and six regional championships over 18 years. His name now joins Garvey’s on the court, a reminder of his extraordinary impact.

Remembering Paul Simmons ’11

The dedication also included a heartfelt tribute to Paul Simmons ’11, who tragically passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition during his senior year. Paul’s name now rests on the gym floor, a reminder of his spirit and love for Marist. His mother attended the unveiling, making the tribute especially meaningful.

The new gym floor will serve future generations of RedHawks while honoring those who helped shape the Marist story. It stands as a symbol of tradition, faith, and excellence that continues to inspire our community.
