Dr. Richard Byrne ’83 is a distinguished neurosurgeon with more than 25 years of surgical experience and a legacy of leadership in academic medicine. In April 2024, he joined Mayo Clinic Florida as the Chair of the Department of Neurologic Surgery, where he leads a team focused on excellence in patient care, research, and surgical innovation.

Before joining Mayo Clinic, Dr. Byrne served for 18 years as Chairman and Medical Director of the Department of Neurosurgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Under his leadership, the department gained national recognition for its surgical outcomes, academic productivity, and advanced neurosurgical care.

Dr. Byrne is widely respected for his expertise in brain tumor surgery, including:

  • Skull base surgery

  • Pituitary surgery

  • Surgical treatment for epilepsy

  • Glioma

  • Brain metastasis
